My husband Jerry and I have been married for 23 years. He is a printer/graphic designer and I am a working RN. Together we are the proud parents of three great children ages 20, 18, and 14. We have not always been homeschoolers. In fact, nearly seventeen years ago when a friend of ours told us she was going to pull her kids from school and teach them at home, we thought she was absolutely crazy!! Sounds all too familiar doesn’t it? I am sure many of you still get that same response today from well-meaning friends, family, or neighbors. God does have a great sense of humor. Little did we know this was a seed He was planting in our hearts.
This will officially be our 12th year of homeschooling. We are proud to report that our two oldest children have graduated from our homeschool. Our firstborn son has been successfully launched out on his own. Our daughter graduated from high school this year with 45 units of college credit and is looking forward to completing her AA in Christian Studies at Trinity Life Bible College next year. Our youngest son is a sophomore in high school this year. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined the journey we have been on. We are so thankful that God led us down the homeschooling path.
We have enjoyed being SCOPE subscribers since we started homeschooling. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for the invaluable help, fellowship, and encouragement I have received over the years from the people in this organization. I believe that when you benefit from something you should also be willing to give back. In the past, I have served on the conference committee, been a Chat Leader, Scholarship Administrator, Graduation Committee Chairman, and Co-Chairman. I have grown and been challenged in each of these roles. With my husband’s full support, I am looking forward to serving another year as Chairman of the Board. I look forward to meeting more of you, sharing with you, and learning from you. chairman@scopehome.org
This is my third year leading the Folsom chat group, and I’m honored to join SCOPE’s board as Chat Group Director. Our family has been SCOPE subscribers for the past 12 years, and SCOPE has been of immense importance in our lives, providing support, encouragement, guidance, and lasting friendships.
My husband Mark and I have been married for 22 years, residing in the Virginia/D.C. area while Mark was on active military duty, and now permanently residing here in Sacramento. We’ve raised Mark’s two sons, Joshua and Jeremiah, now 30 and 33 years old; homeschooled and graduated our now-married daughter, Amy, 20, (adding another son [in-law], Nathan, to the clan); and are thrilled to be starting another home-educating journey with our son Seth, 7.
Our family enjoys gardening, photography, swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor projects, woodworking, and books, books, and more books!
It’s my desire to see this great organization of ours flourishing for decades to come, because SCOPE is a beacon of light and hope for the Christian home-educating community, as we answer the call to nurture and disciple our children for God’s service and for His glory.
My name is Kathy Downard. I am happy to be serving as the SCOPE Librarian. My husband Brendan and I live in Citrus Heights. We have been married almost 14 years. The Lord has blessed us with five children. Ages: twelve, eight, six, four and eleven months old. We became SCOPE subscribers seven years ago.
Our family enjoys Scouting, playing games, biking, and reading. We try to read books that will help build Godly character. We have found the SCOPE Library to be helpful in this area by providing good Christian books that both young and old enjoy reading. We have also enjoyed the educational audio and video tapes that are available at the library.
I would like all SCOPE subscribers to have the enjoyment of going to a library with good Christian and home schooling resources in a child friendly atmosphere. I look forward to many visitors. For more information on the SCOPE library you can call Kathy Downard (916) 725-1306 or check here for the SCOPE library. The library hours are 1pm to 4pm on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. librarian@scopehome.org
Richard Wuehler and his wife Deborah have been homeschooling for about ten years and have been members of SCOPE for about as long. They currently have five children enrolled in their school with two others on the waiting list. Deborah is a chat group leader for Roseville East, and also writes for several homeschooling publications. Richard enjoys exploring creation science with his children (did you know insects instinctively jump/fly towards the person most afraid of them as proven by years of careful lab experience with insects and my family
).
I’m learning how to be a tactful Sergeant At Arms, and keep the board meetings moving without making too many enemies; I’m looking forward to serving the SCOPE board and homeschooling families in the area. I appreciate the many benefits of SCOPE such as regular encouragement of homeschooling in the Lord Jesus Christ, SCOPE Library and newsletter resources, field trips, project fairs, and conferences with like minded believers in the Lord, and am honored to be a part of this great organization.
My name is Jerry Jozwiak. I first started printing in high school. At that time, I’m not sure I ever imagined being involved in the industry for 30 years. I have been involved in all aspects of the printing industry over the years and have been amazed how technology has impacted this trade.
In 1991, I joined the Sacramento chapter of the IAPHC (International Association of Printing House Craftsmen). I chaired the fine print gallery for 3 years and advanced through the organization to become the president in 1996.Through my association with this organization, I found a strong network of peers to share ideas and experiences with. I gained valuable knowledge and developed many personal and professional skills which advanced what I do as a printer today. Printing is more than a trade to me, it is a craft.
Jamie and I have been happily married for 23 years and we have 3 great children. We began our homeschooling journey 12 years ago. Without the help and encouragement from many in SCOPE, I am not sure we would have continued. It has been a blessing to be able to homeschool our children. Not only were we able to keep them in a nurturing and safe learning environment, we were able to instruct them in righteousness and keep them grounded in the Christian faith.
From 2000-2006 my wife and I served on the SCOPE conference committee designing and printing the mailer and program for the conference. When I first thought about the newsletter editor position I stepped back and said to myself, I do this every day for a living, why do it outside my job? Then there was the “I am too busy with things around the house and with the kids to help out”. After praying about it, I realized that everyone is busy and everyone has something else they could do. God has given me this skill and I now have the opportunity to use it to give back to SCOPE.
SCOPE adds many benefits to our homeschooling life: networking, knowledge, & lasting friendships just to name a few.
It is my privilege to serve as your newsletter editor/publications director and I hope I can make it a great read for all of you!

Hi, my name is Anita Jackier and I am pleased to serve as the SCOPE Treasurer. My husband Barry and I celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2008 and we have two children (9 and 7) and two grandchildren (4 and 1) from my husband’s daughter. Prior to God moving mountains and providing a way for me to stay home, I spent 15 years in the workforce in various forms of accounting. ‘Numbers are your friends” became my trademark phrase. It seemed I always worked with people who didn’t like numbers and didn’t understand what to do with them. I thought I was leaving that behind forever. Now I’m educating my children at home and trying to show them that numbers are indeed their friends! God sure has a sense of humor! Even before we had children, we were committed to homeschooling. We saw our friends’ children either spiritually flounder in public school or flourish at home. We knew that God was not offering any options – just the mandate to teach them as we rise up and as we sit down; as we go in and as we go out. Life has thrown us a few curve balls along the way, but we have not waivered in the belief that our children belong at home with us. I have been a member of SCOPE for six years and a chat group leader for three. I am excited to be able to put my years of accounting experience to use for the purpose of furthering private independent homeschooling.
Hi, I am Anthony Colacchia, and I have been the SCOPE Newsletter Subscriptions Manager since the end of 2001.
I have been blessed to have my wife at home with our 3 boys, Chris, Shawn, and Scott. We have been
involved with SCOPE and home schooling our three boys ever since the oldest was in kindergarten. My wife, Valerie,
does most of the work and she does an awesome job.
Much of my time is spent as a mechanical engineer where I help architects design commercial buildings (I do the air and fluid moving systems - heating, air-conditioning, and plumbing etc.)
I am happy to be contributing where I can. I am busy each month keeping all the renewal and address change subscription information database up to date and printing the mailing labels and the SCOPE rosters. You can contact me at subscriptions@scopehome.org (Sorry, I don’t have extra newsletter copies or back issues).
